The name and idea of the Goldfinch Garden comes from a children’s fairy tale I remember from my childhood. The most beautiful garden will win it’s creator the hand of the Princess in marriage, but one gardener lets his garden alone and it grows nothing but thistles. On the day of judging a flock of glimmering goldfinch descend to eat the thistle flowers and win him the prize as they are so gorgeous. This imagery is based on a tableau at the Horniman Museum in London.
