I am always happy to create bespoke lampshades but they do work out quite a bit more expensive - and for good reason.
To explain - the shades on the website have the design screen printed on them first while they are flat. We make our silk screens to match the size and shape of our shades (14” and 10” diameter) so these sizes cannot be adjusted. These printed shapes are sent to our manufacturers to be made up and are then hand coloured in the studio.
We can easily adjust the colourway to suit a client’s needs (for a small fee) but to make a different size, shape or fitting is a very different proposition.
Firstly, we have to order in a bespoke shade from our suppliers which involves a small-order charge. Then I have to paint the entire design from scratch on the three-dimensional shade, doing all the measuring and geometry to adapt the design to fit -before painting it. There is no room for error on a one-off lampshade and it makes for a lengthy process.
To create an entirely new design involves even more process. In this case I discuss the design with the client to establish what sort of patterns and colours they like. Based on this information I then come up with a thumbnail sketch for approval. This may need adjusting depending on the feedback I get (and there is a rejection fee at this point if the commission doesn’t go ahead). Assuming the client is happy with this I then have to scale up my drawing and apply it to the lampshade before painting it.
The end price will depend on the size wanted and the complexity of the design. For a small lampshade in an existing design it starts at around £300 + VAT for a small lampshade. For a bespoke design the price starts at around £500 + VAT.
